Trunk bunkies question

Am I right to assume the threads on these don't go all the way through and that it's basically just a rubber cushion with threaded ends that could possibly rip apart in the middle? If these give way, what's keeping the trunk attatched to the bike, and the passenger from falling if the truck/backrest fails? Of an I missing something?

There are 4 of these as you know. You are correct, if all four nylocs or lock washers give way, then I can only imagine the result. A Vetter safety strap may be in order! For the passenger that is! :cheers

On ships in the Navy those rubber isolation mounts are used on all electrical and electronic equipment to mount them in racks or bulkheads. Believe it or not they do they do fail "all at once" or at least they apparently do to the poor person that maintains that equipment when they find it laying on the deck or the rider that lost his Tail Box. What happens is they are usually all replaced at one time so they deteriorate at the same rate. No one really notices them deteriorating simply because you can't see it. The rubber cracks where it's attached to the metal hardware on all of them. They can be all hanging by a rotting thread until suddenly one of them completely separates and then it's like kicking over a domino. They all go at once. There is a fix for that problem. We always installed safety cables. They are nothing more than short peaces of cable with loops at each end. A safety cable is connected across the rubber with the cable loops sandwiched at each end of the threaded mounts. When the rubber fails the safety cables will prevent the equipment from falling to the deck or personnel or the rider losing his Tail Box.

I saw what four of those failing at the same time in an aircraft did to the electronics rack, so when I found mine bad on my trunk, I went to Lowes and bought me some door bumpers:

A 1/4-20 bolt right through the center and I never worried that the trunk was going to fall off and there was enough cushion between the trunk and the rack that nothing ever broke inside.

2 of mine were busted, glad I checked lol. How do you get the upper side of the bunkies off, the inner circle just spins

Yep, those Metalastik (tm) isolation mounts have been notorious for years, at least with me.
They're great for a while, but out of sight, out of mind, is the problem.
