Contest brought to you by Craig Vetter and myself. The winner will receiver a Vetter t-shirt of your size, provided by Craig.

Here is the big question:
What is the functionality of the wire inside of this snap ring vent?

Post your answer. Craig will be watching for the correct answer. :type

I know the answer, but will let it go for a while to give someone else a chance.

I didn't know for years and had to figure it out by myself. Your moderator probably figured it out by himself, too. That is probably why he is the moderator moderator.

I have learned that you don't have to know the answer as long as you know where or how to find it.;)

My guess: to keep the sides of the pop-out from pinching inward enough for it to pop out of the hole at speed.

OK... I posted this somewhere but don't see it. Here it is again:
No matter what the patent claims, the function of the wire, in practice, is something else. In 1977, I designed my own vents:

My "Angled Vents" were better for motorcycles (which is a clue)
My angled vents had no steel spring. They stayed in place just fine.
Think again.
No winner.
No T shirt.

I always thought they were for pulling the vent back flush (or closing) into the windscreen, but I guess it also helps keep the vent expanded so that it doesn't pop out of the windscreen.

Bingo. "Pulling the vent back in" You are the winner. In helicopters and in my Terraplane sidecar, you could not reach outside to push them in like on a Windjammer. Thus the wires to pull them in.

What size T shirt? Send info via our moderator. We will send your prize out.

Congratulations!

I wonder what might be harder. Does anybody know where the name of my Rainy Day Fender came from?
