I posted elsewhere that I bought this fairing on eBay and here are two of the pictures that were on the add:

It doesn't look too bad here... but

Notice how you can see the bottom of the stereo in this one? I knew the condition of it buying it, but in a past life, I was an aircraft mechanic so these things don't bother me so I figured why not. I got the box yesterday and when I opened it up I was not disappointed. It even came complete with a hornets nest inside the fairing. It's a good thing that the temps are so cold, otherwise I may have had the Sting and not the Rooster!

So I am now going to start a trek through fairing repair with the hopes of getting this thing on my naked GL1200 in time to take it to a GoldWing forum meet and greet in North Carolina in the beginning of July. The first thing I need to do is figure out how I am going to fix this hole!!!!

Last night I went scrounging through the attic looking for something that would work, and there it was. You know those old VHS tape towers? Well this one (or what's left of it) is going to finally make it's way to the dump now.

I first needed to cut it down to size:

78-1390936861-99be49d29ba8235fe666dbc002bf1176.jpg

And then get rid of all those little tangs used for holding tapes:

Now it is just a matter of cutting it down to size to get it to the right dimensions for the hole:

I just need to make a trip to the hardware store to get some ABS glue, some fiberglass, some resin/hardner, and some bondo and this holes goose will be cooked! There are a few other smaller cracks that I am going to take care of at the same time, but those are easy compared to this.

Electrical is next as I will need to do something better than this stereo that was in it.

I understand that it is pricey, but it make a bond that will hold up for a long time. I bought some to repair a crack I have in one of my fairing.

The low temps that the East has been having has been well publicized and that has been keeping me out of the garage for a while, but the wife made a mistake - she went away!

My youngest son is a senior in College and is ready to graduate in May, so he is looking for schools to do his post-grad studies at. This past week my wife and son have been in Boulder Colorado for an audition, so I have had the house to myself, and while the wife is away, the husband will play!

I turned our spare bathroom into a small workshop so that I could do some work in warmth...

Black ABS glue, fiberglass material, more black ABS glue, more fiberglass, and more black ABS glue. So far I haven't had to use any resin as the ABS glue is doing just fine. A little more sanding and I am ready for the next step - a thin coat of bond to smooth everything out:

One area I am not too worried about: the center of the front because it is only going to get cut out for the stereo installation.

The bad thing is that while the temps are going up again, the wife will be home Monday, but they are going to Northwestern on Thursday... :D

Another cold weekend and another College Audition, so that means the wife left me home alone and un-supervised! :D

I have the inside looking pretty good and ready for final sanding and then painting so I decided to get to work on the outside. When I first got the Rooster I put it on the bike just to get an idea of how it would look and found out that the underside of the fairing was hitting the head light ears, so out came the dremel tool and I had to make it fit. Well tonight after some cutting and some sanding, I couldn't help it... I had to see what it was going to look like with the windscreen installed and the fairing mocked up. Here is what I got:

It should do exactly what I want it to do when I am on the open road on long trips. A little more sanding and then I can figure out how I am going to attach this to the handlebars. I have a National Cycle Street Shield windscreen that came with the bike, so I think those parts will be put to use to attach the Rooster also.

I originally wanted to keep this bike naked, but I think it looks pretty good in it's swim suit also.

It's going to be gloss black. I hope I can find some pin striping to match, but it is a silver/gold pin stripe so it might have to be two stripes. I also found where new wind screens are available in clear and tinted: the tinted would be sick!

More sanding and I finally figured out how I am going to mount this to a bike that it was never made for... Now on to the important things: I have to have some tunes!

Been looking for a single DIN unit, no CD player, but USB and SD Card capable, and loud enough to hear without the help of an amp. I was going to get something at the local Wally World, but that pit that I am stuck with never seems to have what I want, so I went shopping on line. When looking, one name kept coming to the surface: Boss Audio: I forgot to mention I didn't want to spend a fortune on the stereo system. Well I picked the one I wanted and found a good price on eBay, also along with the stereo, I also needed new speakers because the ones that came with the fairing were SHOT! As luck would have it, the same place I got the stereo also had the speakers, so $70 later I have a stereo system ordered. A 50 watt unit with 250 watt speakers: that should do what I want them to do, and no CD player, so the weight is like non-existent.

I got home from work today, and it was Christmas all over again:

I just spent all that time filling that big broken spot, now I have to cut a huge hole back into it...

Lots of people beat up Boss. I have to say they make some decent lower quality stereo equipment. I have bought several Boss items over the years and have always been happy. I can't wait to see the unit installed into the fairing. Good pick!

I am on the home stretch now and trying to beat the next "Polar Vortex" or whatever the media wants to call winter this week, so I took advantage of some warm winter days and got my paint on. :)

I just wish I would have got the camera out while the sun was still out because the lighting in my garage sucks!!!

The stereo box look kind of plain, and the area under the windscreen needs to be covered, but I have plans... carbon fiber. :D

I also went to my favorite auto parts store and got some gold and silver pin striping which should match the bike pretty close when I am done with the clear coat.

Weather has finally cooperated to the point that I could paint something and the paint would actually dry. Then I could get something clear over that, and it also dried. Here is how it looks:

208-1396209310-bf7ff43e0e5d66806d167dda6cd56582.jpg

207-1396209307-f257534172f00ee5b7961d042a03103e.jpg

206-1396209305-900eb454fbf1de470ea885c44a2443c7.jpg

Now the top originally was just some drab old contact paper that was faded and dull, so I added a little extra by getting some faux carbon fiber contact paper and put that on instead.

209-1396209312-78070f89ffe1d999de690be18404e912.jpg

Only a few things left to do to it. Windscreen and stereo. The problem with the windscreen is finding some windscreen foam for a fairing company that is no longer around... no problem. Go to your local craft store for some sheets of adhesive backed foam and make your own:

210-1396209314-7e0a411bc291bbc57cde1e65edbf6f2b.jpg

A snip hear and a cut there:

211-1396213276-71c1bed9d9218f919c87c9b6d31023ab.jpg

And it almost looks like it was bought from the factory!

212-1396213706-8ce31f80a4c25198645f73cdfef5685f.jpg

So I am just waiting for some paint to dry on the head of the screws then I can attach the windscreen and the only thing left to do is wire up the stereo. Remember... if you can't feel it, what's the use of listening to it!

It's time to put a fork into this one because it is done.

It has come a long way from the condition it was in when I got it:

The next pictures I post, it will be on the Wing and a Vetter will be leading the way once more.

Holy cows! That fairing has come together nicely. It sure has come a long way. Me, being the period correct purist that I am, I am giving you -1 for a non period correct head unit, and speaker grills. haha

I know, I know. Ill stop. Love the job, looks incredible!

Oh I wanted to use the Original Speaker grills but they will not clear the speakers "yet". I have to make some additional rings that I can use to increase the distance between the speaker and the grill but I broke my fine tooth bandsaw blade doing soemthing else recently so I need to get a new one before I tackle that task.

As far as an old school head... not going to happen. I like the ease of a USB drive too much.
