I got out early this morning for a ride to beat the heat. It was ~ 75 and dry when I left. As time went on, the temp probably got up to 85 or so. Did some fast and some slow riding.

During a slow trip through a state park, I stopped a few times to take a picture or two and I noticed a LOT of heat on my legs that I didn't normally feel prior to putting the lowers on.

Also, a few times when I really dropped the speed in 2nd gear, I swear I heard a sort of a "knocking" sound at it tried to spool up. It happened again in 1st gear when pulling a way from a stop after waiting for a light in traffic.

When I got home I noticed one fin on the outer aluminum head had a small film of oil on the top surface for about an inch or so, which easily wiped off. (if it had been leaking before there would have been dried oil/ dirt there. I don't remember any oil leaks and am wondering if the bike was starting to overheat due to reduced airflow because of the lowers.

When I cut off the plastic part that covers the carbs, I made sure to trim back far enogh so there would be a clear shot from front to back for the air to blast across the cylinder heads while riding. But maybe when idling in traffic the heads cant dissapate the heat sideways?

What do you guys think? I'm considering taking them for for the rest of July and August to play it safe.

Lowers definitely channel engine heat to your legs, so they're off in the summer and on in the winter. No, I don't believe they reduce heat dissipation, as long as you're moving, just redirect it.

A luxury of a water cooled engine is that engine heat takes care of itself, but the heat coming off the engine still roasts the riders ankles. I never really had too much of a problem with the heat on my 1100 as I usually kept my feet on the highway pegs and in front of the heat, so I never took the lowers off. Others I know always take them off in the summer.

I leave my lowers on all year round. I left the lowers intact and have never noticed any excessive heat on my legs. I am running a 1976 Honda 750/4 F1, air cooled of course. I just completed a ride to a meet with the SOHC/4.net group in Dolores, CO where I rode in temps from a low of 46 to over a 100!

I can't get my feet onto the highway pegs with the lowers on because they don't stick out far enough.
