Apologies if I'm posting a topic which belongs elsewhere, or has been posted before. I spent about an hour searching for the same topic but couldn't find any info, so here goes...

After a few thousand miles with the headwind trying to rip my shoulder joints apart, I've bought a late model Vetter Windjammer SS. It wasn't originally fitted to an XS1100, but it soon will be. It was on an '80 Suzuki GS1000 and I've been playing about with the mounting hardware to see what's needed. I checked the Vetter site to see if I could find similar brackets, but all the ones I've found are tubular affairs and mine is steel plates with a pair of heavy duty "spacers". The lower mount appears to go straight onto the XS and the overall position/angle of the upper support plates appears to be about right, so I thought I'd post a couple of photos and ask if anyone else has experience of mounting a Vetter on an XS Special...?

Lower mount is as fitted to the GS1000 frame, no changes at all. Upper mount has been reversed in this pic as the GS1000 mounting plates are too far away from the spacer tube to fit the XS frame at the correct position.

There is a crossbar on the XS frame that the horn bracket mounts above. I've removed the horn bracket and the lower spacer appears to be a perfect fit behind that crossbar - there is a locating plate under the lower Vetter spacer which prevents it being positioned any higher (without removal of that plate).

Using www photos and info from Craig Vetter's site, I've tried to set the mounts in line with the lower edge of the tank, as far back as they will go and with the rear edge lower than the front. I'll need to remove the headlamp and front indicators to check fit of the fibreglass/ABS (It's Ser. No. 24-270159 BTW).

FYI: The bike is sitting on its mainstand, so the angle of the brackets will be lower at the rear when she's back on both wheels...

My next move will be to remove the upper "spacer", cut off the GS1000 mounting plates and make up a pair of new plates that will allow me to bolt the spacer directly into the two M10 holes at the front of the frame (You can see these in the top photo - these mount the oil cooler on UK/EU models) .

This will mean the front spacer bar will be bolted directly to the frame and should give the best support to the heaviest part of the fairing...

So, any comments folks..? I'd like to know I'm on the right track before I pull the headlamp, etc, off as this bike in regular use and it'll need putting back together again before the WJ is fitted permanently...

Cheers

I've tweaked some typos out of the above post and added my WJSS Ser No. Would really appreciate any input on the angle/position of the brackets as fitted as I'll be breaking out the angle grinder this week and that top spacer will soon be part of the XS frame (or as near as makes no difference mechanically).

Cheers

Jeff

Thanks Larry. I've alrady seen that page and comparing the photos to mine the angle looks 'about the same'.

I was looking about on Ebay for Vetter stuff and found someone selling the same bracket as I have (to suit '79 GS1000). Mine was the only one of this type I'd seen 'til this came along... Thought I'd post up the photos.

This is exactly how my bracket came to me... I've turned the top 'spacer' around, so the mounting plates face forward... They'll be absent very soon...

I can see where this set-up could be rather adjustable if there were more holes and attach points...
